Lost and Found

While I struggled through the forest for 2 days, Micha relaxed and rested his knee for 2 days in Kerikeri. But when I just mentioned the word “forest”, Micha turned white and his knee screamed and ached again. Never mind because we spent another 2 days in town and the next section was pretty easy, astonishing and there were a lot to see. Especially the coastline on the East coast with its beautiful beaches, steep cliffs and small islands on the horizon of the Pacific Ocean made hiking difficult to us. Difficult in meaning of many breaks.

On an early afternoon we were on our way to cross the footbridge in Whananaki wich wasn’t possible. Reason for that was Matthew. This sympathetic bloke and his wife introduced us the Naki’d Inn which wasn’t bigger than a wardrobe. But it got all what we needed. 2 beds, Wifi, electric light and sockets were more than enough for us hiker trash. Because our dinner was just noodles and soup, Matthew felt pity for us and offered sweet potatoes, chilli and onions. Combined with our amazing cooking skills, we made ourselves a delicious meal which was a good ending for that day.

To have a bed is something special to us. But we had to get up because we had to stick to our schedule. Back on the trail with Micha, we hiked along some beaches and stopped at the beach in Matapouri for lunch. We took a sunbath and gave our feet a salty refreshment. Fuelled and ready to go we walked for a short time in the wrong direction. A little correction for about 180 degrees and we were on our way to Ngunguru. We gave the trail angels Melva and Hilton a call and they offered us a ride to the Riverbank Lodge. And than it happened for what I was afraid of the entire journey. While I was on my way to the lodge with 15 km/h, Hilton and Micha put everything in the car and passed me a little bit later. After a shower, a tasty wine, a nice talk with our hosts and a good dinner, I realised that my camera bag was missing. I didn’t care about the camera in that moment but all the memories on pictures and movies weren’t replaceable for any money on that planet.

Early in the morning we drove back to the supermarket and the owner asked us to come back at 10 o’clock. Micha said, “Everything will gonna be all right”. But I had a bad feeling about this. To sweeten our time, Melva gave us a little guided tour over the property from the Riverbank Lodge. She was a big fan of raising her own vegetables and fruits. Back in the house there were some good news. My camera bag appeared and I sighed with relief. Immediately we drove to a Maori lady who got a very big hug from me. The journey could keep going. We said goodbye to Melva and walked another 10 km to a junction and took a ride into Whangarai. There we spend the last day together because Micha is flying back to old good Germany.
