Kia Ora my friends

It took us another 5 km to the first point where we felt very comfortable. Clevedon Reserve. It was close to a little jungle but beautiful. Back on the road again for another 6 km and then it got interesting. Up and down, mud, bushes everywhere and lack of power. We couldn’t pitch a tent and so we have to proceed. Eule did a joke about night hiking. Around 9 p.m. we turned on our headlamps. Thanks. It felt like, that we made every 500 meters a break. We laughed all the time just to forget the pain. Around midnight we arrived at the picknick area near the Wairoa dam. Exhausted and hungry we ate our dinner. Time for bed.
A lot of people told me, that the Te Araroa isn’t well mark. I couldn’t believe that but it’s true. Most of our time we spend to look up the map to find the trail again. Our legs were still sore from yesterday and our mood was down at lunch. We already thought about to rent a car and driving to Bluff. But Eule convinced us not do it. The trail isn’t just holiday. Mental and physical problems are around every time. But it is important not to give up when you have a down. You will regret it. After lunch, we entered the Mangatawhiri Forest. Everywhere were lianas which like to strangle us. We slipped a few times very hard and kissed the ground. We just followed the orange triangles through the thick green and we survived.

Damn sandflies. They are bitting everybody without regrets and the bites itched like crazy. In the morning, we had to share the trail with a herd of cows. We embraced the flat terrain next to the Mangatawhiri River and did a break at the Mercer Service Station. Real coffee and orange juice is always good. Sometimes, I’m feeling like in a zoo. All the peoples turned their heads after us, as they haven’t seen a hiker in their life. Waikato River was on the right side and the highway on the left. A lot of people waved and smiled. Either to see us or laughed about us. Until now, the trail isn’t very nice. A lot of road walking. After a couples of kilometers we did a bend to the right and followed the Waikato River. This part was a very nice one. No people and no roads

The Waikato River leads us all the way down to Huntly. We talked to some locals and told them what we are doing. Again, nobody knows something about the Te Araroa. A short run through Countdown to buy something for dinner and then we kept going to the campground. Dave and Carol are the owners from the campground. They are super nice and offered us to move in a cabin for the same price. Just 10 dollars each. They told us, that they had recently a few TA hikers here. We did a very nice dinner. Salad with tomatoes, onions, feta and cheddar and couscous. Yam yam. We will stay at the campground for another day. The next goal will be Hamilton. So see y’all soon guys.
