What an adventure but with a WRONG TURN!!!

Awesome. Shopping, one night on the campground and we were out of Pamerston North. Just one road which lead us directly to the Taranua Range. Here we will hike like hell for the next 6 days under the motto from Eule: “Walking, walking, everyday just walking”. It was very boring in the beginning and so we took a little detour. Well, we got lost. After a short meeting, next to a dead stinky possum we decide to continue instead to going back for another 8 km.

For the logbook: “It was a bad idea”. Because our trail, which we choose by ourselves disappeared suddenly. We pressed every button to get out of our situation. Compass, map, GPS and of course chocolate. But we got more and more into trouble. Torte felt 3-4 meters off a rock (still okay) and we took a shortcut through the forest which took us about an hour. We also lost our favorite 2 person tent. To track down our tent was impossible. The only chance was next to the last sign which was “OMG” 1000 meters back.  It was close to a day trip. Eule got the GPS and we sent him back into the green. After over an hour he came back. He got lost again and he couldn’t find the tent. Hopefully it will not rain for the next 2 days.

If you are into an enchanted forest all the time, you will get thankful for every lookout in the distance. It was possible from the Matawai Hut to the Dracophyllum. A short climb we were surprised what we could see: Mount Taranaki which we climbed around Christmas: Mount Ruapehu and its snow-covered top; the sea around New Zealand and the Southern Island where the next adventure will wait for us. After that the mossy forest swallowed us again. It is always such a big contrast to the rest of the trail.

We left the Waitewaewae Hut in the morning and followed the trail to Otaki Fork with 1km/h. We decided to take a ride from there to Wellington. I will do that part later on when I go back to Auckland. In Otaki we gave Paul a ring. Within 5 minutes he arrived. It is sometimes very nice to have a car. Paul was a trail angel as well and gave us a place to stay. Paid by chopping woods we stayed in a church in Waikanae which served just as an accommodation.

The train took us all the way down to Wellington along the coastline where we spend some days. Its a beautiful city. Its the number one city on our scale right now. The highlight here is definitely the Te Papa museum. You have to spend at least one day here. It took us about 3 hours just for the first floor and there are 2 more. You should also go to the botanic garden, the beaches, the pier, the breweries and the Mount Victoria Lookout. So much stuff to see here. We visited an amazing hardcore concert with 5 bands. Screaming, guitars, drums and bass guitars were so enjoyable for our ears.

Tomorrow we will take the ferry to the Southern Island. We are really excited for that.
