You shall not pass!!! (But we did)

After a long nice rest in New Plymouth we were back in Taumarunui. Resupplying and attack. Back to the Te Araroa which we missed already. Of course the trail was made from concrete. Exactly, road walking for almost 20 km. We arrived in Owhango around 8 p.m. with hot soles. Eule (Owl) talked to an older lady. Her name was Karen and was a little trail angel for us. She offered us a place to stay and promised us to make some handmade muffins with fresh picked blueberries. So damn delisious.
Easy going in the morning. We walked along the 42 Travers. The most difficult part was to cross a river what we could achieved. The trail took a sharp left and we could experience the real Te Araroa again. Muddy, no signs and as a reward Torte got a broken trekking pole and a nice little bird popped on his backpack. Torte turned around and asked: “Did the bird shit on me?” At this moment we started laughing all the time and couldn’t stop for a while. After we had no breath from laughing anymore, we kept going. Well, we will see what will happen tomorrow.
Our excitement got bigger and bigger when we saw the first sulfur lagoon on the mountain in the distance. The next part was one of the most beautiful area since the beginning. Tongaririo Crossing leads us up to the Ketetahi Hut, passed the Blue Lake and the Emerald Lakes, over a mars-like landscape and to the front of Mount Ngaruruhoe. We weren’t alone here and so we had to share the mountain with others. This can be very dangerous. Eule (Owl) and I realized it when we ascended Mount Ngaruruhoe. Somebody yelled: “Stone, Stone, Stone”. We looked down and saw a rock, rolling downhill which had a size of a basketball. Damn gravity. But nobody got hurt. After one hour we arrived on the top. We decided to walk the outer edge which was astonishing. Especially Mount Ruapehu was a breathtaking mountain. We walked around the outer and inner edge and took a look inside a volcano’s mouth. Within 30 minutes we slid down the mountain without breaking our bones. We told Torte what he has missed on the top and hiked down to Whakapapa Village. We spend that night in the Public Shelter but unfortunately the light went on and we couldn’t find a switch.
National Park was our next destination where we had to resupply ourselves. We heard a lot of rumors that it would be a fucking ripoff, because the shop was the only one around National Park. But not with us. During Eule (Owl) watched our gear, Torte (Cake) and I hitched hike back to Taumarunui. Within 3 hours we were back and happy. Happy until we realized that one bag was missing. It was mine with a lot of delicious food. Maybe it was still in the supermarket and another person enjoyed it already. Rather another person than that bastard at the Four Square in National Park.
Yet Tours took our food and brought it to Whakahoro. From National Park there were still 55 km to go. It will take us about 2 days. The weather was amazing. Sun, sun and more sun. We followed the Fishers Track for a while and the sun toasted us alive. We took a bath in the river until we found petrified shells. Like kids we looked for another artifacts, were happy about every single new one and forgot the trail for 2 hours. After the 24 km of dirt road, with beautiful weather and our Whanganui song, we arrived in Whakahoro. Now, we were ready for the “Whang Whang Whang….Whanganui RIVER Whanganui RIVER” down to “Whang Whang Whang….Whanganui Whanganui”. By the way, this is our song for our canoe trip on the “Whang Whang Whang….Whanganui RIVER Whanganui RIVER”.
