From Summit to birthday to lakes to Thirsty Tramper Tuesday - The Te Araroa give lots of varieties

Rainbow over Lake Tekapo

From the Manuka Hut to Wayne’s party is a story that has no equal. The day started that we got into our rain gear again. Eule and Red Bear predicted sun in a few hour that ended up being right after a nice breakfast in a grain bin. The trail was like a motorway and we hiked with full of vim and vigor towards the snowy mountains. The Rangitata River is also there which we are keen to give it a go. Te Te Araroa Trust also declared this river as a hazard zone because it will be dangerous after lots of rain. Unfortunately it rained a lot the last two days and the farmer from the lodge strongly advised against doing the crossing to the other side. We got a ride into Mt. Somer to think about it again. We ordered some food and drinks in the bar and after that we made us comfortable in the kitchen from the campground. “What is that for music next door?”, somebody asked. Some people told us about a birthday party from Wayne. Red Bear, Huw Eule and I checked it out. A big huge and best wishes to Wayne broke the ice immediately and we were ask if we like a beer. There were also very delicious food that we couldn’t decline. After a while we looked each other and had to laugh. In the morning we were hip deep in a river and a few hours later on a birthday between Kiwis. With full bellies we said goodbye to Wayne and went to bed.

The next days we had to make a decision. Either to cross the river or to find a ride around it which is about 95 km. Red Bear and Huw tried to get around it but we both wanted to try the Rangitata River. Also Jeremiah, Kelsey and Caroline were with us again. We discussed and thought about where and when to cross the river, but finally this river was not as hard than we thought. But you still shouldn’t underestimate it. More difficult was the Bush River, which came up right after the Rangitata River. One part was quite dangerous and Eule and I lost grip for a moment and got wet up to the nipples. But where there is a will, there is a way.

Tallest mountain in NZ: Mount Cook
Lake Tekapo
To get to the highest point, the trail climbed up very steeply. For Eule with his proton exchange membrane fuel cell between his cheeks it was not a problem but everyone else has to struggle a little bit.  But the climb ended at the Stag Saddle with its 1925 m where we could see the path along the ridge to the next highlight. Mount Cook is with 3724 m the highest point in NZ and very enjoyable if you have very good weather. To see it we had to take an alternate route which leads us parallel to the TA along a ridge. From there we could also see Lake Tekapo. This area is very well known for stargazing because the light pollution is very less.

Tramper trash - hiker trash
There are some days when our vigor is close to zero. We thought about to stay in Tekapo or to hike out, but thinking about that made us hungry. With a full stomach we wondered again. Should we stay or should we go. But the rain did the decision for us. Suddenly, Eule came back and yelled “Rainbow, Rainbow”. And there it was. One of the most beautiful rainbow which I saw in my life. Colored and without a single gap this rainbow attracted many people like flowers the bees. We took this as a sign and hiked out. Record-braking 2 km later we set up tents next to the state highway and felt asleep.

A long way to Twizel
2 days more and 70 km further we reached Twizel. From here we are trying to get a ride to Queenstown. One reason for that is a little gathering on the 17th of March with some TA hikers. The second reason is to say goodbye to each other. Eule (Owl) is leaving the trail and is going to Steward Island to torquer himself with knee deep mud. Have fun my friend with that. I’m going back to Twizel and hiking down to Queenstown again. Sounds stupid but that’s THRU-HIKING!!!
